With a 265 to 175 majority - and 4 abstentions - the Polish parliament has rejected a bill that would allow abortion on demand until the 12th week of pregnancy.

A bill has come before the Polish parliament intending to liberalise abortion law.

The bill was submitted by Women's Strike, the organisation leading mass protests last year against the restriction of abortion to cases of rape, incest and risk to the health or life of the mother.

The bill proposed propose to permit free-of-charge abortions on demand until the 12th week of pregnancy and thereafter to permit termination in cases of foetal defects or crime such as rape.

265 members of parliament voted against the bill, 175 were in favour and 4 abstained.
