CNN Travel said: “Visitors to Poland tend to make for the bright lights of Warsaw and Kraków. Yet in the far east of the country, the Białowieża National Park is waiting to be explored.

"It has enjoyed protected status for over 100 years and is home to the largest population of European bison on the continent. It's the best-preserved part of the wider Białowieża Forest, ancient woodland that has fast disappeared in recent centuries.

"For nature lovers, this is an escape that's not to be missed."

The CNN Travel list includes sites such as Norwich in England, North Uist in Scotland, Orange in France, Basel in Switzerland, the Apuseni Mountains in Romania, the island of Patmos in Greece, the Picos de Europa mountain range in Spain, the city of Pula in Croatia, and the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.
