According to Dr Paweł Krukow from the Medical University of Lublin, energy drinks are less well understood than coffee and may have serious psychophysical effects, espeically on younger consumers.

Dr Krukow says current research already indicates that teenagers regularly drinking energy drinks become more impulsive and vulnerable to peer pressure. They also experience mood swings when they stop drinking the energy drinks.

Dr Krukow has spoken this week to the Polish Press Agency (PAP). He believes new research is urgently required to better understand the effects of energy drinks.

"Water is, perhaps, the only natural ingredient in these drinks. Otherwise there are no natural ingredients. As well as caffeine and sugar there are other potentially harmful substances."

In February 2023, a new public health bill was put before the Polish Lower House. Among other new limitations, it would aim to ban the sale of energy drinks containing Taurine and caffeine to minors.
