In line with tradition, the birds’ appearance heralds the arrival of spring. The first stork in Poland this year was spotted in the northwest of the country in late February, roughly a month ahead of schedule.

These majestic birds have also arrived in the central-western part of the country, where male storks are now busy preparing their nests in the village of Sroczyn.

“Yes, the storks are now in Sroczyn," ornithologist Bartosz Krąkowski told public broadcaster Polish Radio.

"The first males have already arrived, staking out territories and waiting for some females to join them as this year's migration has begun," he said.

“With each passing day, more of them will arrive," Krąkowski added. "Within a fortnight, undoubtedly, storks will be a daily occurrence for all to behold."

Storks are a national symbol in Poland, which until recently was their largest nesting ground in Europe.

Radio Poland’s Michał Owczarek has the story.
