Officers say they stopped 1,154 drunk drivers during their Safe Easter 2024 road safety campaign, which lasted from Good Friday to Easter Monday.

Meanwhile, 363 drivers temporarily lost their licences for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 kph in built-up areas, traffic police spokesman Robert Opas told reporters.

"Regrettably, this year's data is more concerning than last year's," Opas said. "There were 45 more accidents and two more fatalities than in 2023. In terms of drunk driving, we stopped 48 fewer individuals found driving under the influence."

The Easter weekend is usually when Poles spend time with their extended families and travel extensively to visit their relatives. Family gatherings are often accompanied by alcohol.

A total of 1,893 people were killed and 24,125 injured in 20,936 accidents on Polish roads in 2023 as a whole, according to police data released last month.
