Buzek's legacy includes his tenure as President of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2012, where he made history as the first leader from the "new" EU countries to hold the position. His presidency, which began with a strong endorsement of 555 out of 713 votes, was notably symbolic for Central and Eastern Europe.

During his inaugural speech, he reflected: "This is how Europe changes. I see this election as a tribute to the millions of citizens of our countries who did not submit to the regime," adding that the values of "Liberty, equality, and fraternity" still resonate deeply within the EU.

Before his influential role in European politics, Buzek was known in Poland as a scientist from the Silesian University of Technology and gained political prominence after the 1997 parliamentary elections won by the liberal conservative Solidarity Electoral Action. Despite initial doubts about his longevity in office, he became the first post-1989 Prime Minister to complete a full term, implementing significant reforms in pensions, health, administration, and education.

Throughout his career, Buzek has been committed to environmental protection, particularly air quality, and has been an active participant in the scientific community. His political journey also includes significant underground activity during the martial law period in Poland, contributing to the anti-communist Solidarity movement under the pseudonym "Karol".

In the European Parliament, Buzek has been involved in numerous committees, focusing on industry, research and energy, and climate change mitigation, among others. He has been instrumental in shaping EU policies on energy, advocating for a shift towards green hydrogen, which he sees as vital for future energy security and environmental sustainability.

Buzek has also been honored multiple times for his influence and effectiveness, including being named MEP of the Year three times by The Parliament Magazine.
