The illumination is scheduled for 10 p.m. Warsaw time and is intended as a tribute to Poland’s history, culture and the millions of Polish Americans.
It will be the tower’s first Independence Day lighting for Poland, according to the consulate.
Lewandowski, described as one of Poland’s most recognizable athletes, is expected to attend after traveling from Spain following a Sunday hat-trick for Barcelona.
The Manhattan landmark, completed in 1931, is among the world’s best-known skyscrapers. Since 1976 it has used changing light schemes to honor national holidays, social causes and major sporting events; its LED system enables citywide light shows.
Polish community events marking the holiday are also planned at the Consulate General and the Piłsudski Institute in New York.
