Poles rank voting, positive image abroad as key acts of patriotism—poll

Poles see voting and positive representation abroad as key acts of patriotism, while language tops the pillars of identity, a new IRCenter poll for Onet found.

Respondents were asked to mark behaviors they view as patriotic. Voting led with 78%. Next came representing Poland positively abroad at 77%, and showing foreign guests Polish culture and cuisine at 76%.

Buying Polish products and services, hanging the national flag on state holidays, and visiting historic sites each drew 73%. Promoting Polish culture on social media was cited by 71%, and seven in ten said talking about Poland at home expresses patriotism. Passing down family recipes scored 69%, and following the successes of Polish athletes and creators 68%.

Asked what makes them feel Polish, 88% pointed to knowing the Polish language. Monuments and places of remembrance were chosen by 84%, the same share as Poland’s nature and landscapes.

Home, family and upbringing scored 83%, as did place of birth or residence. Culinary practices and family traditions, and Poland’s history and heroes each drew 81%.

National symbols—flag, coat of arms and anthem—won 80%, as did achievements of Polish artists, scientists and athletes. Pride in Poles’ successes on the international stage was cited by 79%.
