The statement followed a decision by Pope Leo XIV, announced by the Apostolic Nunciature, the Vatican's diplomatic mission in Poland.
Ryś will replace Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski, who has led the Kraków archdiocese in southern Poland since 2017.
Within the Polish Bishops’ Conference, Ryś serves as chairman of the Council for Religious Dialogue and the Committee for Dialogue with Judaism, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
He is also a member of the conference’s Permanent Council, its Council for Ecumenism, Council for Culture and Cultural Heritage Protection, and Council for Family Affairs.
Ryś is additionally a member of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Bishops and the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
His episcopal motto is “Virtus in infirmitate” (Strength in Weakness), the Polish Catholic bishops said.
His formal installation in Kraków’s cathedral is scheduled for December 20.
Until then, Archbishop Jędraszewski will continue to serve in the role, the Polish Bishops’ Conference said.
Ryś previously served as the metropolitan archbishop of Łódź in central Poland.
