The number of confirmed flu cases has quadrupled over the past fortnight, according to government data.

Health experts warn that the peak of infections is expected within the next two weeks.

The current wave is predominantly caused by subclade K, a mutated variant of the influenza A (H3N2) virus.

Those most vulnerable to severe illness and complications include the elderly, children, people with chronic conditions and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Medical professionals are urging people with infection symptoms to remain at home.

Health authorities emphasise it is not too late to receive a flu vaccination.

The vaccines are approximately 70 percent effective and reduce the risk of severe illness.

The sanitary inspectorate stresses that vaccination is particularly important for children, seniors, pregnant women, healthcare workers and those employed in education.
