Poland’s education ministry has upheld restrictions on the use of digital devices in preschools but softened a planned ban on screens after consultations with teachers and social partners, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna reported on Tuesday.

The newspaper said the issue of screen use in preschools had become the focus of heated debate. It recalled that in January Deputy Education Minister Katarzyna Lubnauer had said preschools would become spaces entirely free of screens and digital devices.

That position has since changed, the report said. Speaking at a meeting with teachers in Gorlice on Tuesday, Lubnauer said: “We modified this provision a bit. The regulation now contains a provision on limiting the use of screens in preschools.”

Education ministry spokesperson Ewelina Gorczyca said the changes were introduced after consultations with teachers and social partners.

“Teachers pointed out that the provision in the original draft regulation concerning a ban on screens raised some practical doubts. Questions appeared about its interpretation,” Gorczyca said.

She added that one example was how to treat interactive whiteboards, which many facilities had bought under EU-funded projects and used during classes.

Supporters of a total ban warn that the revised regulation could leave the situation unchanged in many facilities and that screens will continue to be widely used, the newspaper wrote.
