Nearly two-thirds of respondents in Poland found U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat toward Iran unacceptable, according to an IBRIS opinion poll commissioned by daily Rzeczpospolita and published on Wednesday.

The survey asked respondents how they viewed remarks Trump made on April 7, hours before the deadline of an ultimatum over reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. president threatened Tehran, saying that “a whole civilization will die tonight”.

Some 62.6% of respondents described the statement as “unacceptable”.

Another 19.1% said the words were exaggerated but saw them as part of negotiations, while 13.7% viewed them as a sign of the U.S. president’s tough stance toward Iran.

Rzeczpospolita said 92% of supporters of the ruling coalition assessed Trump’s declaration critically, as did 44% of opposition voters.

Women were more likely than men to view the statement negatively, with 72% of women expressing criticism compared with 52% of men.

The greatest tolerance for the threat was among respondents aged 18-29, where only 31% assessed the remarks critically.

The survey was conducted on April 10 and 11 on a group of 1,074 respondents.
