In the first eight months of 2021, there were 123 accidents and 519 collisions involving bikers, leaving two people dead and 102 injured, according to police data cited by Poland's PAP news agency.
In 2020 as a whole, there were a total of 157 bike crashes, resulting in five deaths and 139 injuries, while there were also 754 collisions, the state news agency reported on Thursday.
Incidents involving electric scooters show no signs of decreasing, either, PAP reported.
In the first half of the year, there were 20 crashes involving electric scooters, with one person dead and 18 injured. In addition, there were 28 collisions.
To compare, throughout 2020, there were 22 accidents involving electric scooters, resulting in one death and 19 people suffering injuries. There were also 55 collisions.
Warsaw’s City Guard has frequently been forced to intervene as cyclists flout rules, with a total of 485 such incidents throughout last year and 408 so far in 2021, the PAP news agency reported.
According to police data, bikers are most often guilty of using sidewalks without justification, riding through pedestrian crossings where there are no cycle paths, ignoring traffic lights, and riding under the influence of alcohol, PAP reported.
