Tomasz Siemoniak took to social media on Sunday to extend “wishes and words of respect to our water lifeguards for their selfless service” on National Lifeguard Day.
Poland observes National Lifeguard Day every year on June 29 to recognize the efforts of its Volunteer Water Rescue Service (WOPR). The day was established in 1927 to promote the idea of water safety and rescue.
Founded officially in 1962, the WOPR has played a key role in water safety for decades, conducting rescue operations, promoting swimming education, supporting environmental efforts and training lifeguards nationwide. The organization also works closely with emergency services to ensure safety on lakes, rivers and coastal waters.
Last year, WOPR said 364 lifeguards were involved in rescue operations during flood emergencies, logging more than 25,000 hours under hazardous conditions.
The group also trains more than 10,000 people each year in water rescue and first aid.
Despite ongoing efforts, drowning remains a serious issue in Poland.
According to national police data, 444 people drowned in the country in 2024, slightly down from 450 in 2023. Most incidents occurred in unsupervised swimming areas, often involving alcohol.
Each year, WOPR urges the public to swim only in designated areas and follow lifeguards’ instructions to help prevent further tragedies.
