The District Court in Warsaw dismissed a lawsuit filed by Ordo Iuris against Marta Lempart, one of the leaders of the Nationwide Women's Strike.
In 2019, Lempart called the Ordo Iuris Foundation "Kremlin-funded fundamentalists" on social media, referring to the parliamentary proposal "Stop Pedophilia," which aimed to ban sex education in schools.
Ordo Iuris demanded an apology and 100,000 zlotys in damages from Lempart. On Tuesday, the court ruled that Lempart's post did not violate Ordo Iuris' personal rights, but the verdict is not final as they have announced plans to appeal.
Poland moves to tackle SLAPP lawsuits that silence critics
A Polish court ruled that activist Marta Lempart did not need to provide direct proof of Kremlin funding linked to Ordo Iuris.
Indirect evidence and organizational ties were considered sufficient, and the court emphasized the importance of protecting freedom of speech and activists’ rights.
At the same time, Poland is developing new legislation to combat SLAPPs - lawsuits intended to silence critics - by introducing measures to quickly dismiss baseless cases and impose fines on those who misuse the legal system.
