Rare phenomenon along Poland's Baltic coast reveals vast stretches of seabed

Strong southern winds in recent days have caused the Baltic Sea along Poland's coast to retreat significantly exposing large sections of the seabed that are usually hidden beneath the water.

On the left is a view from Świnoujście, a port city on Poland's Baltic coast. On the right is Kołobrzeg, another coastal town in northwestern Poland, where the sea has receded so far that the sandy beach now nearly reaches the end of the local pier.

The rare occurrence drew crowds to the coast over the past weekend.

In Świnoujście, a port city near the German border, the sandy beach extended almost to the town's famous landmark, Stawa Młyny, a distinctive white windmill-shaped navigation marker, clearly revealing part of the submerged seabed.

Nerby, in Międzyzdroje, on Saturday, October 5, the waterline receded by several dozen meters, uncovering parts of the breakwater, coastal rocks normally submerged, and a large number of jellyfich washed up along the shore.

Further along the coast, in Kołobrzeg, pedestrians were able to walk on dry sand almost all the way to a café of the local pier, literally strolling across the exposed seabed.

Social media were flooded with the images of this extraordinary low tide, leaving many users amazed by the unpredictable power of nature. Such wide, empty stretches of seabed are rarely seen along Poland's Baltic coast.
