The main event is PIRLS 2026, which assesses reading comprehension among Year 4 pupils.

Some 150 randomly selected schools will take part across March and April, with results expected in December 2027.

In the last PIRLS study in 2021, Polish pupils ranked fifth globally and top within the EU, alongside Finland.

Two pilot studies will also run this month.

TIMSS 2027, which measures maths and science ability, will be trialled in schools across the Małopolska, Silesia and Pomerania regions.

For the first time, it will include Year 8 pupils alongside Year 4, enabling comparison of skills across the full primary school journey.

The ICCS 2027 pilot, testing civic knowledge and engagement, will take place in schools in the Mazovia, Łódź and Lubusz regions.

Eighth-grade students will for the first time complete this study digitally, allowing for more interactive tasks.

This edition places particular emphasis on online civic engagement and critical evaluation of social and political information.

All schools were selected through international randomisation procedures.

The studies are coordinated in Poland by the Educational Research Institute (IBE).
