Sixty-nine percent of respondents said it is important to be attentive to others’ needs and willing to provide assistance, while 23 percent said people should primarily focus on their own affairs, the poll found.

At two-thirds of respondents said they had at some point engaged in voluntary, unpaid work for people in need or their communities, while 34 percent said they had never done so.

When asked about more recent activity, 24 percent said they had undertaken unpaid work over the previous year, compared with 76 percent who had not.

The survey also found that nearly seven in 10 respondents identify with the idea of altruism, and about two-thirds have acted on those beliefs.

Among those who volunteered in the past year, respondents reported devoting an average of 19 days to unpaid work.

The survey was carried out from February 5 to 16 on a representative sample of 967 adults.
