Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, topped the ranking with a score of 7.75 out of 10. The ranking credited the city's position to moderate living costs, a high level of safety and a well-developed network of hostels with very high average ratings.

Kraków came second with 7.64 points, followed by Istanbul in Turkey and Lisbon in Portugal.

Gdańsk was the cheapest destination in Europe for solo travellers, with an average daily budget of EUR 74.53.

Kraków was the second-cheapest city in the ranking, with an average daily cost of around EUR 87, and was almost as safe as Prague, according to the study.

The top 10 also included Berlin, Porto, Seville, Barcelona and Riga.

The index was based on an analysis of 48 of Europe's most visited cities across 11 indicators, ranging from accommodation prices and safety to the number of attractions.

Zurich was ranked the least attractive city for solo travellers due to its high costs. It had the highest accommodation costs, the second-highest food costs and the third-highest transport costs. Reykjavik and Venice were also among the three lowest-ranked cities.
