Under a revised schedule for the event, motorcycle races will be held throughout July in the north-central Polish cities of Toruń and Bydgoszcz as well as in Gniezno in the west and Rybnik in the south, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency has reported.

A group of 15 speedway riders from across Europe, including three Poles, are expected to take part amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Speedway racer Bartosz Zmarzlik was in January named as Polish athlete of the year for 2019 following a public vote.

The sport of speedway has many fans in the country, and Zmarzlik last year became the third Pole to win a world title, after Jerzy Szczakiel in 1973 and Tomasz Gollob in 2010.

Polish speedway stadiums are set to reopen to spectators from June 19.
