Topping the leaderboard after three rounds, Meronk took a one-shot lead into the final day of the tournament, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s polskieradio24.pl website reported.

There was no shortage of drama on Sunday as the leaderboard fluctuated, but Meronk produced a brilliant finish, posting a final-round 66 to claim the overall win.

He carded a 20-under 268 at Mount Juliet, three strokes clear of New Zealand’s Ryan Fox.

It's the Pole’s maiden DP tour victory and he couldn’t hide his delight.

‘A dream come true’

"It's such a relief, to be honest," Meronk told reporters. "I've been coming quite close a couple of times this year and to finally open the door is just a dream come true. That's why we practice every day and I'm super happy."

He added: “I'm not stopping, I'm gonna keep going forward and it's just another step for me. I'm super excited (to win) here in Ireland, such a great history. I can't describe it.”

Sunday’s victory takes Meronk up to 7th in the DP World Tour ranking. He is also set to climb up the Official World Golf Ranking.

Next week, the 29-year-old from the southwestern Polish city of Wrocław will be taking on the likes of Tiger Woods in the prestigious Open Championship at St Andrews, Scotland.
