Sowiński became the first shooter representing Poland to win a medal at the Paralympic Games when he claimed silver in the P3 mixed SH1 25m pistol at the Tokyo Paralympics last year.

He received the 2022 Guttman Award from the Polish Paralympic Committee and a cash prize of PLN 10,000 (EUR 2,100) at a ceremony in Warsaw on Wednesday, the sport.tvp.pl website reported.

Sowiński was chosen from 21 nominees by a ballot among the jury as well as fans, who cast their votes online, Polish Paralympic Committee officials said.

Named after the neurosurgeon Sir Ludwig Guttman, “the father of the Paralympics,” the Guttman Award was also granted in three other categories.

Andrzej Ochal, head coach of Poland’s Paralympic table tennis team, was voted Coach of the Year.

Meanwhile, Poland’s 50th National Para-Athletics Championships, held this year in the northwestern city of Szczecin, were named Event of the Year, according to officials.

PZSN Start, Poland’s biggest parasports association, which turns 70 in 2022, was voted Organisation of the Year, the niepelnosprawni.pl website reported.
