Australian Open: Poland’s Linette makes 2nd round of women's singles

Poland’s Magda Linette has made it through to the second round of the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne.

The 30-year-old Pole beat Egypt's Mayar Sherif 7-5, 6-1 in their first-round women's singles match at Melbourne Park on Wednesday.

Linette, 45th in the world ranking, next takes on Estonian world No. 19 Anett Kontaveit in the round of 64.

Meanwhile, Poland’s world No. 1 Iga Świątek has advanced to the third round of the Australian Open, with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Colombia's Camila Osorio on Wednesday.

The 2023 Australian Open runs until January 29.
