Tennis: Poland’s Hurkacz through to 4th round at Australian Open

Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz has moved into the fourth round of the men’s singles at the Australian Open Grand Slam tennis tournament, with a hard-fought win over Canada's Denis Shapovalov in Melbourne on Friday.

The Polish world No. 11 won the five-set thriller 7-6, 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3 to reach his first career round of 16 at Melbourne Park, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Hurkacz will now face the winner of a match pitting American Sebastian Korda against Russian Daniil Medvedev for a place in the quarterfinals.

Earlier on Friday, Poland’s Iga Świątek eased past Cristina Bucșa of Spain to enter the fourth round of the women’s singles at the Australian Open.

The 2023 Australian Open runs until January 29.
