Polish speed skater Piotr Michalski says he is setting his sights on the next winter Olympics in Italy after narrowly missing out on a medal at the Beijing 2022 Games.

Michalski finished fourth in the men's 1000 metres at the Olympics in China, with a time of 1:08.56, just 0.08 seconds off the podium.

The Pole held the lead for a majority of the event and fell to fourth place in the final seconds of the competition at the National Speed Skating Oval arena in Beijing.

Michalski earlier finished fifth in the men's 500m at the Beijing Olympics, with a time of 34.524 seconds, 0.03 behind the third-place finisher.

Speaking in an interview later with Polish sports daily Przegląd Sportowy, Michalski said: "I am among the best in the world and I confirmed this in two different events."

He added: "Coming into the season I didn't even dream about it. So it would be wrong for me to consider myself a loser or unlucky. On the other hand, it's pity I missed out on a medal, which eluded me by hundredths of a second. I was so close twice. I felt like could nearly smell that medal."

The 27-year-old also told Przegląd Sportowy that he was "entering the best years" of his career as an athlete.

He said: "I need to build on that. I believe this is not the end, but the beginning of a wonderful journey for me. I have no plans for the next four years. The longest I can plan for is a year or so ahead. What's next? We'll see. I am definitely not giving up, and somewhere in my head I think that the Games in Italy will be my time."

Michalski last month scooped the gold in the men's 500m at the European championships in Heerenveen, the Netherlands.

Poland won one medal at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games in China, placing it 27th in the overall table, alongside Latvia and Estonia.

Poland won two medals at the previous winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, finishing 20th in the medals table.

The country scooped six medals, four gold, one silver and one bronze, during the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, the best Olympic Winter Games tally for Poland ever.

Four years earlier in Vancouver, Canada, Poland also claimed six medals: one gold, three silver and two bronze.

The next winter Olympic Games will be held in Italy's Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in 2026.
