The opening round of the 2024 Dakar Rally took place in Al-Ula, Saudi Arabia, on Friday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
It totalled 157km, including a 28km special, according to organisers.
Poland's Eryk Goczał, 19, with co-driver Oriol Mena of Spain, came first in the Challenger class.
His uncle Michał Goczał, with co-driver Szymon Gospodarczyk, finished second, while Eryk's father Marek Goczał, with co-driver Maciej Marton, came 12th, Eurosport reported.
Eryk Goczał won the 2023 Dakar Rally in the lighter SSV category.
Meanwhile, Polish former European champion Krzysztof Hołowczyc, with co-driver Łukasz Kurzeja, came 6th in Friday's Prologue in the main car competition.
Hołowczyc scooped third place in the 2015 Dakar Rally.
The 2024 edition begins in earnest on Saturday, with Stage 1 from Al-Ula to Al-Henakiyah, over 532km, the PAP news agency reported.
Stage 1 includes a 405km special, according to organisers.
In all, 23 Poles are taking part in the 2024 Dakar Rally, news outlets reported.
It comprises 7,891 km of roads, tracks and dunes, including 4,727 km of specials, in Saudi Arabia, according to the organisers.
The 2024 Dakar Rally takes place over two weeks, finishing in Yanbu, on the shores of the Red Sea, on January 19, the PAP news agency reported.
