Released by Deutsche Grammophon, it features all of Beethoven’s five piano concertos. The recording was made last year to mark the 250th anniversary the composer’s birth, but its launch has been postponed due to the pandemic.
In a pre-release review of the album, Marc Pullinger wrote in Bachtrack, the classical music website: “Purity and clarity are hallmarks of Zimerman’s playing and there was an almost aristocratic composure to his phrasing and a velvet touch… Everything was meticulous.”
The recording marks Zimerman’s return to Beethoven’s concertos after more than three decades.
Zimerman, 64, rose to prominence after winning the top prize in the 1975 International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, at the age of 18. He has since enjoyed a spectacular career, performing with the world’s leading orchestras and giving a select number of recitals in the most prestigious concert venues.
