The awards, also known as the Coryphaeus Prizes, are now in their 11th year. They were launched in 2011 as an initiative by the country's music community to recognize its most outstanding members.

The accolades are intended to honor individual performers as well as musicologists, critics and music journalists. Award winners also include humanists, researchers, activists, promoters of the arts and cultural managers, as well as groups of artists, institutions, artistic events and a variety of creative and educational projects.

The awards are given out in categories including Personality of the Year, Musical Event of the Year, Debut of the Year and Honorary Award.

This year's Honorary Coryphaeus for Lifetime Achievement went to pianist Lidia Grychtołówna, a leading figure on the Polish classical music scene who is dedicated to supporting and promoting young talent.

Meanwhile, composer Aleksander Nowak was named as the winner in the Personality of the Year category, and guitar virtuoso Kinga Głyk was hailed as the Discovery of the Year.

The award in the Musical Event of the Year category went to Danuta Gwizdalanka for her book about 20th-century Polish composer Karol Szymanowski.
