Campaign promotes Polish literature among foreign readers

The government-affiliated Polish Book Institute has launched the latest edition of its New Books from Poland campaign, which seeks to promote domestic literature abroad.

As in previous years, the institute has published an English-language catalogue that showcases the best new Polish releases to foreign publishers, while readers are pointed towards Polish books that have already been translated into their native languages.

“We want to draw the attention of foreign readers to the excellent books by Polish authors, and persuade foreign publishers that Polish literature has huge sales potential in their markets,” said Dariusz Jaworski, CEO of the Polish Book Institute.

The campaign features four 30-second YouTube videos for the reading public about four recent Polish literary exports: Elżbieta Cherezińska’s The Widow Queen (which has been translated into English), Jakub Małecki’s Rust (translated into German), Wiesław Myśliwski’s Horizon (translated into French), and Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Last Wish (translated into Hebrew).   

Another, 60-second video presents the four books, while an additional banner campaign showcases the works to the four target audiences, as well as to readers in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland and Britain, among other countries.

In all, the drive is expected to reach 30 million viewers, according to the Polish Book Institute.

The strategic aim of the New Books from Poland campaign is to make the world’s reading public aware that Poland offers “literature that is attractive, inspiring, diverse, unique yet universal, and of high artistic merit,” organisers said.

The campaign has been financed by Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, which is the founder of the Polish Book Institute.
