Entitled Silent Rebels, the show brings together Polish painting from the years between 1890 and 1918, the last three decades before Poland regained long-lost independence.
On display are 130 works by such artistic luminaries as Jan Matejko, Jacek Malczewski, Olga Boznańska and Ferdynand Ruszczyc.
Besides being some of Poland’s greatest cultural treasures, these masterpieces also form an important aspect of European art at the dawn of the 20th century.
The showcase was initiated by Munich’s Kunsthalle, one of the leading art venues in Germany, and co-organised by Poland’s state-run Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
Other collaborating institutions are the National Museums in the Polish capital Warsaw, the southern city of Kraków and Poznań in western Poland.
The exhibition runs until August 7.
