Now in production, the film is being directed by Poland’s Jan P. Matuszyński, Polish state news agency PAP has reported.

Matuszyński’s previous movie, Leave No Traces, was in the main competition at the prestigious Venice Film Festival in 2021.

‘Ghost marriage’

Minghun will see Dorociński play Jurek, a Polish man who suffers the death of his daughter in tragic circumstances, news outlets reported.

Jurek and his father-in-law Ben, played by Daxing Zhang, decide to stage a minghun, or “ghost marriage,” an ancient Chinese ritual that aims to provide spouses for people who die unmarried, the PAP news agency reported.

For both men, the decision sparks “an emotionally volatile journey deep into themselves,” according to PAP.

The clash of Jurek and Ben’s very different cultures is intended to help make both men realise that “regardless of their origin, we all belong to one human family, where basic emotions are shared,” the film’s producers Wonder Films said.

‘A story about hope, desire for love and search for the meaning of life’

Minghun is “a story about loss, hope, the desire for love, the search for the meaning of life and the answer to what comes after it,” according to Wonder Films.

“It is about the most important emotions and existential limits of human experience,” the company added.

Matuszyński told reporters that the project “evokes many associations,” including with the works of Krzysztof Kieślowski and Michael Mann, as well as with the 2019 Cannes and Oscar-winning South Korean feature film Parasite.

For Dorociński, it is another international role after the Netflix drama series The Queen’s Gambit and Vikings: Valhalla, as well as the upcoming American action spy film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, the PAP news agency reported.

Mingun’s international cast also includes up-and-coming actors Natalia Bui and Antek Sztaba, as well as Fenfen Huang, among others.

The film is slated for premiere in 2024, producers said.
