The opening ceremony on Tuesday was followed by a screening of Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, starring Hollywood actor Johnny Depp, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The French film director also appeared in the title role, portraying “Louis XV’s favourite lover,” according to news outlets.

Earlier, another Hollywood star Michael Douglas received an honorary Palme d’Or in recognition of a career that includes an Oscar for Best Actor for 1987’s Wall Street, the PAP news agency reported.

The main competition at Cannes 2023 comprises 21 films, including Ken Loach’s The Old Oak, Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera and Perfect Days by Wim Wenders, organisers announced.

The entries will be judged by a jury led by Swedish filmmaker and two-time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Ostlund, the IndieWire website reported.

Polish highlights

There are no Polish films in the main competition at this year’s festival, but one of the Palme d’Or contenders, The Zone of Interest by Jonathan Glazer, features cinematography by Poland’s Łukasz Żal, according to news outlets.

Moreover, the short films competition includes As It Was, co-directed by Ukraine’s Anastasia Solonevych and Poland’s Damian Kocur, about a Ukrainian woman who fled the Russian invasion to Berlin, the PAP news agency reported.

Meanwhile, the section sponsored by the Association for the Distribution of Independent Cinema (ACID) features In the Rearview, a documentary about refugees from war-torn Ukraine by Poland’s Maciek Hamela, the Deadline website reported.

The 2023 Cannes Film Festival runs until May 27.

Last year, Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski’s EO scooped the Jury Prize at Cannes.
