More Poles join Oscar awards body

More Polish filmmakers have joined the US-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which picks the winners of the Oscars.

New Academy members include Polish actress Joanna Kulig, who rose to international stardom for her lead role in Paweł Pawlikowski’s 2018 film Cold War.

Other Poles on the list include scriptwriter Ewa Piaskowska (IO and Essential Killing, dir. Jerzy Skolimowski), cinematographer Joanna Dylewska (In Darkness, dir. Angieszka Holland), film editor Agnieszka Glińska (IO, The Silent Twins), and director Agnieszka Smoczyńska (The Silent Twins).

Polish-born US director Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) is also among the newly invited members.

A total of 398 film artists and executives were invited this week to join the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, bringing the total number of members eligible to vote for the Oscars to 9,375.
