The announcement, which positions Żal among esteemed contemporaries, was made as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts unveiled its list of nominees on Thursday, with Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" leading the pack.
In the prestigious realm of the BAFTA awards, Poland's own Łukasz Żal has emerged as a noteworthy contender, receiving a nomination for his cinematography in Jonathan Glazer's 2023 film "Zone of Interest" and placing Żal in an elite circle of cinematographers including Rodrigo Prieto and Robbie Ryan.
"Zone of Interest," Glazer's adaptation of Martin Amis' 2014 war novel, offers a haunting exploration of the family life of Auschwitz death camp commandant Rudolf Höss.
The film received rave reviews, with British daily The Guardian describing it as “a chilling Holocaust drama, [which] pulls the banality of evil into pin-sharp focus”.
Żal's competitors for the BAFTA statuette include Rodrigo Prieto for "Killers of the Flower Moon," Matthew Libatique for "Maestro," Hoyte van Hoytema for the front-runner "Oppenheimer," and Robbie Ryan for "Poor Things."
"Zone of Interest" stands out with a total of nine BAFTA nominations across various categories, including director, adapted screenplay, sound, supporting actress, and non-English language film.
Matching "Zone of Interest" in nominations is Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon," contending for awards in best film, music, editing, costumes, makeup, and hairstyles, among others. Leading the race this year with a staggering 13 nominations, including best film, director, leading actor, adapted screenplay, music, and editing, is Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer."
The BAFTA winners will be unveiled in a ceremony on Sunday, February 18.
