Countdown to Poland’s Eagles film awards

A tale of a Polish-American independence hero and a Cold War spy thriller are among the productions vying to be named best film at Poland’s prestigious Orły (Eagles) awards.

The awards for 2024 will be handed out by the Polish Film Academy at a gala ceremony on March 4.

Among the movies with a shot at the title is Paweł Maślona's Scarborn, a historical drama that tells the story of Polish-American liberty hero Tadeusz Kościuszko,

Other standout productions include Jan Holoubek's The Double, a spy thriller about two men living on the opposite sides of the Iron Curtain in 1970s and 1980s Europe.

Another contender is director Agnieszka Holland’s The Green Borderwhich tells the story of a migrant crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border.

Also competing for the Eagles awards is The Peasants, a hand-painted animation about the 19th-century Polish countryside by the directorial duo of D.K. Welchman (formerly known as Dorota Kobiela) and Hugh Welchman. The film is based on the novel by Nobel Prize-winning Polish author Władysław Reymont.

The Polish Film Academy announced nominations in a total of 18 categories.

At last year’s Eagles awards, Jerzy Skolimowski scooped the prize for best director, while his Oscar-nominated EO was named best film and claimed five other statuettes.
