The exhibition features more than 50 works of art loaned from the Musée de la Vie Romantique in Paris as well as a selection of items from Warsaw's National Museum.

They offer insights into the life and careers of Romantic artists who were active in the New Athens district of 19th-century Paris.

The exhibits include paintings by Eugène Delacroix, Ary Scheffer’s portraits of Chopin, memorabilia of George Sand and her family, as well as a collection of Chopin's letters and music manuscripts.

In her remarks during the opening ceremony, Gaëlle Rio, the director of the Musée de la Vie Romantique, pointed to the European dimension of the exhibition.

She said: “Let us remember that Ary Scheffer hailed from the Netherlands, Chopin was a Pole, while Eugène Delacroix and George Sand were French; they all met in Paris and were linked by deep bonds of friendship."

Organizers stress that the Parisian arts scene of the early 19th century had a profound influence on Chopin’s life and musical career.

The exhibition runs until the end of October and will be one of the events accompanying the 19th International Chopin Piano Competition, which opens in Warsaw on October 2.
