“Share the memory lest it fades away” is one of the key slogans for this year’s commemoration of the Warsaw Uprising, as Poland prepares to mark its 81st anniversary.
Poland will mark the 81 anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising with a symbolic minute of silence, nationwide sirens, and sky tributes to honour the thousands who fought and died in the 1944 World War II resistance against Nazi German occupation.

In Warsaw and across the country, people will observe a symbolic minute of silence at exactly 5 p.m. on Friday - the moment known as the “W” Hour - when the uprising against Nazi German occupation began on 1 August 1944.

Sirens and silence to mark 81 years since Warsaw Uprising

To honour the fighters and victims of the 63-day insurrection, which became the largest resistance effort in German-occupied Europe during World War Two, sirens will sound across many Polish cities, church bells will ring, and traffic will come to a standstill for a full minute.

Tributes in the sky to honour Warsaw Uprising heroes

Among various commemorative events, exhibitions, and the traditional singing of wartime songs, symbolic tributes will also take to the skies.

Pilots from the Warsaw Aeroclub will draw the emblematic anchor-shaped symbol of the Polish resistance - the "Fighting Poland" sign - using smoke trails. Meanwhile, a plane will fly over the Vistula River carrying a banner reading Pamiętamy 1944 (“We Remember 1944”).

Warsaw city officials are encouraging residents to look up at the sky at exactly 5 p.m. on 1 August to reflect and remember.
