“The Brigitte Bardot Foundation is deeply saddened to announce the death of its founder and president,” the group said in a statement, calling her a world-renowned actress and singer who gave up a celebrated career to dedicate her life to animal welfare.
The date and place of her death were not disclosed.
Bardot rose to international fame with her breakout role in Roger Vadim’s 1956 film And God Created Woman, after appearing in 17 films in just four years and catching media attention at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival. In 1961, she won Italy’s David di Donatello award for best foreign actress for La Vérité by Henri-Georges Clouzot.
In addition to her film career, Bardot recorded music throughout the 1960s and 1970s, collaborating with artists such as Serge Gainsbourg and Sacha Distel.
She retired from acting in 1973 and became a devoted animal rights advocate.
In 1986, she founded the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Animals, raising funds for its work by auctioning off many of her personal belongings.
