The artwork references The Saragossa Manuscript, Has’ 1965 film adaptation of Jan Potocki’s 1815 novel The Manuscript Found in Saragossa.

The film, set in Spain during the Napoleonic Wars, is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Polish cinema and has won international acclaim, including praise from directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola.

The mural was created by Venezuelan artist Carlos Zerpabzueta, whose design was selected from more than 90 submissions reviewed by a jury.

The project was initiated by the Polish Institute in Madrid. Its director, Maria Ślebioda, said at the unveiling that the mural helps build cultural bridges between Poland and Spain, linking cinema, literature and architecture.

The tribute comes as 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Has’ birth. Retrospectives of his films—including How to Be Loved, The Hourglass Sanatorium, The Codes and The Doll—were held this year in nine Spanish cities.
