The prize, established in 1993, honours individuals recognised for their contributions to society and their sense of global responsibility.
It is named after Charles IV, the 14th-century ruler who founded the University of Prague in 1348, Central Europe’s first university.
Holland is the eighth recipient of the award and the first woman to be honoured since its creation.
A graduate of Prague’s Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU), Holland has long-standing professional ties to the Czech Republic.
She has previously received an award for cultural merit from Czech President Petr Pavel.
Her films include Europa Europa, In Darkness, Green Border, Franz, A Secret Garden, Washington Square, The Third Miracle, To Kill a Priest, Total Eclipse and Copying Beethoven.
