Official in charge of Poland's vaccination drive gets first COVID-19 shot

The official in charge of Poland's inoculation campaign says he has received his first shot of a COVID-19 vaccine as part of the national effort he is spearheading.

Michał Dworczyk said in a social media post on Monday that he had been immunized against the coronavirus with a vaccine developed by drug maker AstraZeneca.

"Today I became one of those vaccinated with AstraZeneca,” Dworczyk, who is chief of staff to Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, announced on Twitter.

"I encourage everyone to sign up for COVID-19 shots,” he added, mentioning coronavirus survivors and teens under 18, who were on Monday given the green light to schedule appointments as Poland ramps up its vaccination campaign.

Dworczyk in February tested positive for the coronavirus. He recovered after suffering only mild symptoms.

survey last month found that roughly six in 10 Poles wanted to get vaccinated against the coronavirus.

More than 16 million COVID-19 vaccine shots have been administered in the country so far, officials announced on Tuesday.

Dworczyk has previously said that the top priority is to "vaccinate as many Poles as possible within the shortest possible time."

Poland on Tuesday reported 1,734 new coronavirus infections and 245 more deaths, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 2,856,924 and fatalities to 71,920.
