Gdynia has since 1987 served as the venue for the Polish Film Festival, and it also has a film school whose graduates have won numerous prizes at festivals both in Poland and abroad.

Gdynia is the second Polish city, after Łódź, to be named a UNESCO City of Film.

"For the older generation, Łódź would be the main answer when asking about the film industry in Poland," Maja Wagner from the culture department at Gdynia City Hall told reporter Danuta Isler.

"However, nowadays, more and more people regard Gdynia as a city that has a modern approach to film, film producing and directing," Wagner said.
