The Polish president, accompanied by First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda, made a two-day trip to the Persian Gulf country this weekend for talks on bilateral business opportunities and energy tie-ups, news agencies reported.

The trip came as part of Poland's efforts to diversify gas supplies and reduce its energy dependence on Russia.

The president’s foreign policy aide, Jakub Kumoch, has told the media that Qatar is one of Poland’s main suppliers of LNG and that its role is expected to grow in the future.

While in Qatar, the Polish president on Sunday met for talks with the country's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani.

Duda also attended a Poland-Qatar Economic Roundtable to discuss energy deals and potential team-ups in sectors such as aviation, education, finance and agriculture.

A special team of experts will be set up by the two countries to develop an action plan designed to boost bilateral trade to USD 1 billion a year, officials told reporters.
