At least one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and another injured when Russia struck a military target in the Zhytomyr region in the north of the country, the ukrinform.net website reported, as Russia's war on Ukraine entered its fifth month.

Regional governor Vitaliy Bunechko was quoted as saying that "nearly 30 missiles were launched at one military infrastructure facility" near the city of Zhytomyr.

He added that almost 10 missiles had been intercepted and destroyed.

In the Chernihiv region, also in the north, governor Vyacheslav Chaus said the town of Desna had come under massive rocket strikes, the Reuters news agency reported.

Chaus added that the attack on Saturday morning caused infrastructure damage but no casualties.

Desna is home to a training centre for Ukraine's infantry forces, according to Reuters.

Meanwhile, four people were wounded after Russian missiles hit a large Ukrainian military base near the Polish border on Saturday morning, news agencies reported.

Russia fired six missiles from the Black Sea, with four hitting the base and two being intercepted and destroyed before hitting the target in western Ukraine, regional governor Maxim Kozitsky said.
