Andrzej Duda signed the plan into effect after it was overwhelmingly approved by both houses of parliament, state news agency PAP reported.
The government in July unveiled a new road safety initiative aimed at making the country’s highways and byways safer for travelers.
Under the new rules, the maximum fine for traffic offenses will go up from PLN 5,000 (EUR 1,080, USD 1,215) to PLN 30,000 (EUR 6,500, USD 7,300).
Meanwhile, drivers failing to respect pedestrians at crosswalks will face a fine of no less than PLN 3,000.
Those breaking the speed limit by more than 30 kph will be subject to a minimum fine of PLN 800.
The changes are expected to come into force in January.
