The event, called "Preserve Independence: National Defense Fund Silverware," was launched on Monday to commemorate the establishment of the fund in the 1930s to raise money for the Polish army in the face of the looming threat from Nazi Germany.
Poles proved to be extremely willing to contribute both cash and valuables as well as land, and even grain and farm animals.
“This exhibition shows how dedicated and ready for self-sacrifice for their homeland the Polish nation was in the 1930s by contributing to this national fund to help defend their country under threat,” Culture Minister Piotr Gliński said at the event's launch at the Royal Castle in Warsaw.
“It also proves that the community, which was not free from divisions in the prewar period, managed to unite around an overriding goal, hence the decision to showcase this effort to all Poles,” he added.
The project was launched simultaneously in all of Poland’s 16 provinces.
