Poland conspicuous by its absence at Trump-Zelensky meeting

Neither Poland’s President nor Prime Minister had their seat at Monday’s high-level talks in Washington on Ukraine, which has provoked outrage among political analysts and opposition politicians, who argued the country was deliberately sidelined on the world stage.

Given that Poland has become a hub for international aid channeled to Kyiv as well as NATO’s highest defence spender in relation to GDP, its absence seemed the most puzzling to local analysts.

“I see this as something of a misstep, given that Poland borders Ukraine and that virtually all aid sent there has passed through our country. We also took in the bulk of refugees, so leaving Poland out feels, in a sense, like a slight”, American studies scholar Wojciech Kwiatkowski told Polish Radio.

“I don’t think it was the Americans who decided this; rather, President Zelensky simply didn’t raise the issue of Polish participation”, he added.
