While Poland still does not allow same-sex marriage or civil partnerships, the decision could open the door to recognizing marriages concluded in other EU countries.
Hubert Sobecki from the Miłość Nie Wyklucza (Love Does Not Exclude) association highlights the significance: "The ruling itself does not change the situation of same-sex couples here in Poland, however, what this ruling does change, we do have a chance of making the first step towards marriage equality."
He also points to the practical implications: "People who get married abroad in a different member state of the European Union – there's an obligation for the state to issue the transcription of the marriage certificate here in the country."
A report by Agnieszka Łaszczuk looks at what this ruling means in practice, the technical steps for authorities and how activists are pushing the government to act.
