Zbigniew Rau is due to meet Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, among other officials, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Bilateral issues, Ukraine war, cooperation agreement
The talks between the Polish and Iranian top diplomats “will provide an opportunity to discuss the most important issues related to bilateral cooperation, particularly as regards the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine,” according to the Polish foreign ministry’s spokesman, Łukasz Jasina.
Rau is also expected to outline Poland's stance on the security situation in Eastern Europe in his role as current chair of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), reporters were told.
Moreover, Rau and Amir-Abdollahian are set to sign an agreement "on cooperation in the fields of culture, education, science, sport, youth, and mass media,” Jasina said in a statement.
Polish-Iranian ties
Poland’s foreign minister is also due to visit Polish graves in the capital Tehran and in the central city of Isfahan, the PAP news agency reported.
In addition, Rau will pay tribute to soldiers and refugees from Poland and other countries who were welcomed in Iran at the height of World War II.
The visit comes almost exactly 80 years after those events in 1942, which underlines the traditionally friendly ties between Poland and Iran, officials told reporters.
Friday was day 72 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
