Pentagon officials have spoken to the New York Times, providing forecasts for the near future of the war in Ukraine.
According to those officials, Russia will probably make gains in Donbas. Severodonetsk and probably the remainder of Luhansk Oblast will "probably fall" in a matter of "days", but depleted and exhausted Russian forces will not be able to expand further.
The New York Times article recalls that Russia refocussed its efforts on Donbas after its failure to take Kyiv. At that time President Biden predicted that the coming 4-6 weeks would be crucial for the outcome of the war.
